Is Canada's relationship with the US on the rocks, or is it just a minor spat? A recent comment from a Canadian Conservative MP has ignited a debate about the tone of Canada's diplomatic approach towards its powerful southern neighbor.
Jamil Jivani, a Member of Parliament representing Bowmanville-Oshawa North in Ontario, recently declared in an interview with the American news outlet Breitbart that Canada is "shooting ourselves in the foot" by engaging in an "anti-America… hissy fit." This strong assertion comes at a time when anti-US sentiments have been simmering in Canada, largely in response to former President Donald Trump's imposition of tariffs on key Canadian industries and his controversial remarks about Canada being the "51st state."
However, the leader of the Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre, has publicly distanced himself from Jivani's remarks. On Tuesday, Poilievre clarified to reporters that Jivani's views do not represent the official stance of the Conservative Party. He acknowledged that many Canadians are indeed "legitimately upset by the unjustifiable tariffs and the comments that the president has made," suggesting that there are valid reasons for Canadian frustration.
But here's where it gets controversial... Jivani's comments were made following an unsanctioned trip to Washington D.C., where he met unofficially with US Vice-President JD Vance. Vance and Jivani share a history, having been former roommates and law school classmates at Yale University. Jivani had initially stated, via a post on X, that his trip was aimed at assisting Prime Minister Mark Carney in trade deal negotiations with the US. Despite the trip not being government-sanctioned, Jivani reported having "productive meetings" with the White House and the State Department, even relaying a message from the President: "Tell the Canadians I love them."
Prime Minister Carney had previously mentioned that Jivani was briefed on trade matters by the Minister of Canada-US Trade, Dominic LeBlanc, but emphasized that the MP was not acting in an official capacity. This situation is particularly sensitive given that Jivani's constituency is home to many auto workers who have been directly impacted by US tariffs.
And this is the part most people miss... Even Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who has been a vocal critic of Trump's tariffs on the province's auto sector, expressed reservations about Jivani's choice of words. While Ford supported the idea of MPs and premiers lobbying in the US, he stated, "But no, I don't call it a hissy fit." This suggests a broader concern within Canadian politics about the diplomatic language used when addressing sensitive trade issues.
Canada continues to face sector-specific tariffs from the Trump administration, in addition to a general 35% tariff on goods not covered by the existing free trade agreement with the US and Mexico. This agreement is currently undergoing a scheduled review, expected to conclude later this year.
